Bird blogger and photographer Craig Nash let us know how he attracts birds into his garden with different bird feeders, and gives us some tips on how to capture the perfect picture:
Bird feeders
“I feed the birds in my garden all year round. I have a peanut feeder, which attracts mainly Great Tit, Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Starling, Greenfinch, House Sparrow and Long-tailed Tits.A Nyjer feeder which mainly attracts Goldfinches, Siskin and Lesser Redpoll and a window feeder which I put sunflower hearts into which attracts Goldfinches, Chaffinches, Blackbirds and occasionally Lesser Redpoll.
I also have created an apple feeder which attracts Blackbirds, Blackcaps and Thrushes.
I also have a fatball feeder which attracts house Sparrows and all the tits (Bought in Dobbies Lisburn I may add)
”
Bird Photography
“As for photography I would suggest putting feeders within camera distance of the house and preferably in an area where the birds can escape to bushes, shrubs or trees. Also site them where the feeder is going to get direct sunlight as the difference between good light and bad light can either make or break a photo.”

Hello Craig
Great to see someone else getting creative with apple feeders. Excellent idea with the canes spaced out there. I wired mine in loops around a small tree hoping to get the group of Waxwings that were in a very tall, mature tree not far away to come in to my garden.
The Waxwings didn’t take up my invitation but Starlings, Blackbirds, Blue tits and Goldfinches did. It was a great success. For the last three years I’ve also had success using garden obelisks as apple feeders . Passing winter Blackcaps enjoy them to.
Apples also add a bit of colour into the garden too don’t they? Great for your photos and for my videos too. Enjoy your count, hope you get lots of photos
