The much anticipated and all-new Dobbies Garden World in Aberdeen threw open its doors for the very first time on Friday.
The new store has created 70 new jobs.
The site at Lang Stracht, replacing the existing store near Hazelhead Park, cost £11.6 million to create and has brought 70 new jobs to the local community.
San Francisco-based artist Clark Sorensen caused great interest with his flower-inspired urinals, which are an intriguing feature of the men’s toilets at the new store. Customers can choose between an orchid, an arum lily, a pitcher plant or a more conventional design if they prefer.
Clark Sorensen designed the eye-catching urinals for the new Dobbies store
James Barnes, chief executive of Dobbies, is excited about the trailblazing store and believes it illustrates Dobbies’ commitment to the green issues: “The Aberdeen store is a concept for a new generation of garden centres in the UK and the benchmark from which we will launch all future stores.
“Opening our Aberdeen garden centre is a step towards our future vision to create stores which are carbon neutral.”
The Rose dress was designed by Amanda Montague from Aberdeen's Gray's School of Art.
A fun-filled opening ceremony also featured a model wearing a dress created from roses, paying tribute to the fact the store has been built on the former site of the city’s famous Cockers Roses business.
Dobbies indoor plant advisor Jimmy McRae, 55, who has worked on the site for 40 years, commented: “I’m so proud to be able to help open the new store. I know our customers in Aberdeen will love our new garden centre.”

I am enquiring to see if you need any staff at the moment. I have been working as a groundskeeper for the last 6 months but finished recently. I will be 18 in March and would be keen to look at any opportunities within your store and garden centre. I live in Blacktop which is about 5 minutes form Dobbies. I look forward to your reply.
With Thanks

it will now be 2 weeks on saturday that i bought and paid for table and chairs called the bengall set 414748. I was told it would be del in under 2 weeks and still not heard any word of it. If i had been told that it was taking longer than this i would not have bought it. Can you get someone to call me on 07740873576 and let me know what is happening with it today plaese. Another concern i had when i was there that when we used the cutlery in the restaurant i had to go back 3 times as 2 forks and a spoon still had food sticking to them. Not very nice.
Hi Mr Dunbar, I’m sorry to hear your troubles with the delivery of your goods. I help with the blog so I don’t have the ability to address your query personally but if you go to http://www.dobbies.com/Information/CustomerServices/C there’s lots of info there about customer service issues that you can access both online and over the phone. I hope that can be of some help to you and that you get your furniture soon. All the best.
Hello
My Name is Darren and i live in Kincorth Aberdeen.
I was looking on your Website on how to apply for work with Dobbies, it may be that i cant find it.
I am 15 at the moment and turn 16 in less than 2 weeks.
I have been working Voluntarily with the Gardener in our Area for the last 6 weeks now just to get to grasps with the Gardening Industry.
I do this every Thursday, Friday and the occasional Saturday and i love it so much.
In all honesty i never done so Great at School but i seen it through regardless.
Whilst working with Kevin (the local gardener) it has made me realise how hard the work is but more importantly how rewarding it is to see the public happy with their Gardens, Landscaping, Planting etc. I just think its great and i also dont mind putting in 12 hour shifts as i have done in the past weeks.
Just to be given a chance would be fantastic, may it be me working initially for free until i prove my worthiness to you.
Also, if i am providing this in the wrong part of the site and there is an application part would it be possible for you to point me in the right direction.
Thank You Very Much
Darren

Hi Darren, your best bet would be to email the store in Aberdeen: aberdeen@dobbies.com saying what you said here as we are not in Scotland and just look after the blog. You can also call the store on 01224 686 000 or pop in and ask to speak to a manager. Email may well be the best way to get the ball rolling and then you can follow it up if you don’t hear anything for a bit. Best of luck to you and I hope you keep up all your excellent gardening work!
