Choose your garden furniture materials carefully

When choosing garden furniture be sure to give the type of material some serious thought.

Different materials have different strengths and weaknesses that make them more suitable to various situations.

Listed below are the most popular garden furniture material types with some useful information about each, to help you choose the best material for your needs.

Metal

Wrought iron garden furniture has a classic appeal and is often crafted into traditional, ornate and some times intricate designs. Heavy and durable, iron can stay outside all year, although if painted it may flake due to rust. So a quick bit of sanding and repainting may be required from time to time.

Aluminium can also be cast to appear much the same as iron furniture without the rust problem. It is also lightweight which makes aluminium furniture easier to move around. However, unlike heavy metal furniture, aluminium items may require storing indoors in strong winds. Non cast aluminium gives a modern, clean and sleek finish that works well with either glass or plastic.

Wood

The natural beauty of wood makes it a perfect fit for any outdoor space. A traditional favourite, wooden garden furniture comes in all shapes and sizes and is easy to look after. Some woods may need treatments or stains to help them deal with different weather conditions. However woods such as teak have a high oil content and are naturally durable and water repellent. Other woods are not always so well protected from water so be sure to check the manufacturers care instructions.

Stone

Stone furniture, such as granite, is visually striking, tough and enduring. It’s strong lines, smooth edges and solid nature create a unique aesthetic quality. It can also be placed outside and left all year round without succumbing to any of the elements. Its natural weight can be an issue for some people and granite garden furniture is often expensive. However, it will last a lifetime and is extremely low maintenance making it an excellent material for outdoor furniture.

Plastic

One of the most varied and versatile materials in garden furniture is plastic. Its highly adaptable nature lends itself to a myriad of designs, colours and forms of furniture. It is also very affordable and extremely long-lasting. Although very durable, plastic does require ongoing care to avoid mildew and scratches. Due to its light weight, plastic furniture should be stored inside during high winds and poor weather. By rotating it during periods of strong sunlight, coloured plastic furniture can be protected from bleaching in the sun.

Resin

Resin is a natural material produced by trees which when hardened makes a versatile material for outdoor furniture. Its natural qualities make it extremely resilient and tough in all weathers. It is also very easy to clean and maintain. Similar to plastic, it should be well cared for during periods of high heat and sunlight and due to its lightweight nature should also be stored indoors during strong winds.

Textilene

Textilene is a man-made fibre used to produce a breathable and comfortable mesh. Textilene is also flexible, so it will curve and shape to the weight of the body, making it supportive and comfortable. The synthetic fibres used in production create a water repellent, stain resistant and hard-wearing material that is easy to maintain. Due to its sleek contemporary feel and looks, textilene is normally used for modern outdoor furniture, especially sun loungers.

Cane and rattan

Rattan and cane are naturally produced materials that are woven through the art of wicker to create chairs, tables and benches. These materials are highly adaptable to changes in temperature and humidity making them ideal for conservatories. Rattan and cane is strong and lightweight, so don’t be afraid to move your wicker furniture outside when the sun is shining. Due to their lightweight nature they are best kept indoors over the winter months. Also, their natural materials can make them susceptible to mild discolouration if left outside too long.
